KICentral Takes You Back To 1972

Great pics, and I really appreciate you adding mine to the album.

I've got a question about this pic:

There were really live monkeys around Screamin' Demon?? I am in awe of this part of the park (along with LCS). The theming and the landscaping looks out of this world. Question: What is the building in the background? Not sure of what angle I'm looking at.

Wish I had a ticket to this place they call Kings Island I see in these old pics!!

Yes there were monkeys however the ride was netting around it so they couldnt get on it!

edit: Or was it water that kept them off? I dont recall

I am just stunned when I see how elaborate that area was.

And the darned thing is that I was there and don't remember it! :D

Water is used at many Zoological facilities as a deterrent to keep monkeys in enclosures. That is not to say that it is absolutely impossible for monkeys to get out. They just find the frigid water not worth it!

I just think about a recent installation like Firehawk. Can you imagine them now going to the trouble of having landscaping, water, and/or live animals?

...which makes one wonder what Dominator will look like two years from now at Kings Dominion....

Terpy, who remembers when people made fun of Six Flags for parking lot coasters...

What a groovy picture! I was born in 1972 and miss the Hanna-Barbera characters at Kings Island. At least I can wathc them on Boomerang.

Chef, does the Boomerang Network pay you to name drop them so often? ;)

Ha! Gordon, you really think he's ever going to read this again and reply to you? Unless he's promoting another article he wrote, then he'll probably never view this topic again because he's down at the GWL with coasterwmmn and Rumor Smasher.

It's interesting to see how even the shops were attractions in and of themselves. When you went to Kings Island it wasn't just about riding rides, it was an entire experience. Now eating is just something you have to do while your there...

Isn't Amazon Falls were Scream'n Demon was?

Kind of... Screamin' Demon was in the general vicinity of what we now call Action Zone.

Does anyone have a photo of The Beast queue area in the early years before they drained the lake?

Uh...different lake....different draining...

Surely you remember the canoes? And that the lake survived even after Beast opened...for a while...

I remember the water around The Beast. I was a sad little girl the first time that I saw that I couldn't throw my coins in the water that rushed down from the roof. Wasn't the water drained the year before Vortex opened?

I'm probably wrong but I thought it was later than that. I swear I can remember the water and I was born in 90.

Right. I would say Amazon Falls replaced Screamin' Demon in the same way Delerium replaced King Cobra. As I recall, Demon ran roughly parallel to the back of Timberwolf. So Amazon Falls occupied part of the site, but not all of it. And, I do remember the monkeys and the netting used to keep them off of the ride. And I remember that there were carp in the water similar to the lake by the former Bubba Gumps.

I'm amazed by how much corporate sponsoring there was, even back in 1972. Makes you wonder, eh?

Remember, Taft was in the broadcasting business. They were quite comfortable with the concept of sponsors, and they did it very tastefully. It was also a very different time.

You're right. Looking back it wasn't blatantly obvious or obnoxious like it is today. That makes sense as well with Taft, I guess I forgot.
