  1. I have never seen any ride that did not have some type of emergency and redundant positive locking device. I 'm guessing if we can't see one, then they are all probably located in the top of the ride.
  2. Weight really isn't a problem when locking something that swings, you just need something that will keep the arm from moving. I am sure the motor will lock at the top, and there will probably be some redundant system in case the ride encounters some type of problem.
  3. In regards to the TV's and the shows. I would be happier if they added more speakers and just played lots of decent music videos, as well as some of the other stuff. Time seems to speed up when you are waiting in line, singing along to a hit song.
  4. I'm sure the E-stop drains the ride faster than the normal shutdown. Normally, E-stops do everything faster, because they are obviously to be used in Emergencies. I would bet there are some elecxtronically actuated valves throughout the ride, that when E-stop is hit, they open and allow the ride to drain at a higher rate of speed than a normal shutdown. I am just wondering, how much water is moved perminute to keep the ride flowing smoothly. Anyone know? I would bet at least 2,000-3,000 gpm's at least.
  5. Actually, I think the item that is all wrapped up is actually a very large hydraulic pump. It appears to have fittings on the one end. Chances are that since the ride swings, the loading platform for the ride probably moves up and down depending upon the cycle of the ride. In addition to this, I am sure there is some type of device that locks the arm in place, probably from the bottom, while the ride is being loaded/unloaded.
  6. If there is a tird ride that is actually being built, one can only hope its not Spongebob in 3D. I wouldn't consider that building a new ride either, just changing an existing one. Anyone remember what was said, way back when they filmed the discovery channel thing for TR:TR. Didn't Jeff Siebert say hmmm about some clearings noticed throughout the park. Who remembers all this?
  7. Good concerts at riverbend are always fun, as long as they are not in the spring. That is the only major problem with Sunlite Pool/Coney island When the river floods, bye bye Coney. In 1998, the water made it past the roof of the pavilion, which is about 10 feet off the ground. Yikes!
  8. From someone who grew up around a farm, chicken wire and chain link fence are two completely different things. Chicken wire is just meant for that, holding chickens in. Its holes are very tiny, and water coming at it, at high speeds woudl destroy it. The other problem is, it would easily get rusted through in les than one season, with water on it, all the time. I would bet its chain link fence, and just meant to disrupt the flow of water and give it some rapid looks.
  9. I was at Coney Island a couple of weeks ago, and the Python was still there. Also, Coney Island is much more than a pool and a couple of water slides. Coney Island also has numerous other rides, inculding kiddie rides, bumper cars, a big fun slide, mini golf, bumper boats, pedal boats, canoes and other various rides. In addition to this, there is also a stage and an outdoor banquet hall, a Larosas and a Skyline Chili. Its fun to visit at least once a season. Its not PKI, but then again, it is an amusement park, thats cost less than half of PKI's price for a one day admission. for more info visit Coney island
  10. That sounds right for water movement. Chain link fence would make for a really bad screen for keeping things from being sucked into a pump, considering the large holes in chain link fence. Pump grates usually have small slotted holes about 1 to 2 inches wide and about 1/4 to 1/2 in tall, for water inlet. although big things like rocks and stuff can damage pumps, there are much simpler things like air which can actually dent the inner part of the pump that pushes the water; Its called an impeller.
  11. When people use the term "Old Coney" they are actually referring to the original Coney island amusement park on Kellogg Ave. The park was very popular, but then in the 80's through 90's it dwindled, and now its back up to having a decent selection of kids rides, and the only coaster I know of themed after a can of soda.
  12. I don;t think so. HBl and Nickelodeon look tacky with all the birght colors and crazy stuff, but it is meant to be that way to draw attention to it, and draw people there as well. Coney Mall already looks tacky. Most buidlings seem to be in some stage of well used or disrepair. The signs for the rides are painted, but the paint has faded with time and last seaosn things were beginning to look junky. I would guess at least half of the light bulbs in Coney Mall on everything from rides to buildings do not work, or are burned out, and need to be replaced. It would be easier and better looking to just get rid of the old lights and bring in some new ones, with newer technology that will last a little longer, and wear a little better. Millions or not, it would look good when finished, and if the park wanted Coney Mall to be filled like AZ is everyday, then they should at least be thinking of this as a future goal. I never said it all had to be done at once, but they could do a little bit each year over say like 2-4 seasons, and in the end things would look awesome. There is nothing tacky about giving an area of the park a face lift. Its something that is expected to happen with time and age.

Well thats good to know. Last season there were a couple of times where people were getting very Peeved, since the computers were not working right, and it was taking about two or three times the normal wait to get their pictures. The last day we went, we waited almost 45 mins to get our pics, and ended up going to Keyhole Photo 2, just so they could print the thing out.
  14. 500,000 is pocket change, if we look at how many millions PKI spends on rides each year. I mean come on, spend one season not putting anything huge in, and renovate the coney mall area. I have this excellent vision for coney mall that would give it an updated yet retro look. The archway entrance needs neon curisve lights in red, spelling out Coney Mall, with an underline beneath it. Coney mall also needs to have some tro style streetlights lining down the middle of it, evenly spaced and providng some good light. Coney Mall's buildings, need to be white with a splash of color. They should also have a molding aorund the top with some neon light aorund each building. Red light would be very good, as would other colors. Use of fiber optical lighting owuld really bekewl on some of the building fronts and either that or some neon to replace those old painted signs on the rides. You can have things look retro and updated at the same time. What does everyone else think Coney Mall needs in the future? I want to hear some more specific thoughts from everyone else.
  15. Deliruim -- 13 stories in the air, rotating 360 degrees and swinging through about a 270 degree arc! enough said!

Yeah, but when the computer is working right, digital pictures are useless. I think PKi needs to get some system that is easy to use, and that some firm that specializes in digital imaging, can take care of for PKI. I hope PKI does this already and edoesn't ahve their own park epople working on the computers. I bet it woudl be a real pain in the you know what.
  17. Paint is not the fix-all for PKI. Everyone says that the park needs paint. Well I hate to be the spolier, but there are parts of the park that need a heck of a lot more than just "paint." PKi needs to really look at some things that are starting to look dilapidated and give them a fresh new look. I don;t care if they add alumin, or restore the wood work, or clad everything with some PVC stuff, just so that it looks good. There are places where rotting and water soaked wood is showing up and really detracting from the overall beauty of the park. I think coney mall needs a total facelift with some major redoing of buildings, and add some retro looks and some neon lights, redo some ride signs and other things, and the place will look great. I think PKi shoud be interested in doing things like this at least every 10 years or so, to keep the park looking nice. It may cost money, but will keep the aprk in good shape
  18. I thinkk that would be a good idea. There is soo much to do at PKI, and I think some of the people that attend PKi only once or twice a seaosn, really need some direction as to what is good in the park. I know I have talked with numerous people in line, who were visiting the park for the day, and asked about what rides were decent, and which ones they should skip. I think i had that conversation at least 10 times last summer with various people.
  19. I think it would be kewl havinga rollercoaster train, on an old section of track, with vines grown over parts of it, and claw marks up the side of it, and part of the rear cars seats missing, like some animal jumped out and attacked it. That woudl really fit the theming of The Beast. They need to do some theming to it, like the themed crate at the entrance to SOB, to give some thrill to the whole coaster. I like The Beast better because it at least winds through the woods, and isn't as painful to ride, while SOB is pretty much out in the open, and doesn't have any theming except that crate at the entrance.
  20. Thats great..............McDonaldization............LOL. Now only if it weren't so Ironic that fast food is rarely fast. I do appreciate the ride ops, and they do have a job to do, so everyone who is mean to them, KNOCK IT OFF, and we will all be a lot happier!
  21. I am in agreement with that. at least a weekly chat with just members to keep up with what all is going on. It would be nice to be able to get some guests in on chats though, and have some type of controlled Q & A session.

I think they need to adjust the camera speeds and settings in the off season. if they did this, and made sure all the strobes went off at the right time, the pictures would be much better. I just hope keyhole photo works right this year. Last year they had tons of problems getting things to print towards the end of the season.
  23. I can't believe a place like PKI would actually consider using white shirts for the supervisors. why didn't they just use somethign else like red? Hides the stains better. Our upper level officers in the fire department have white shirts, but at big incidents they are in the heated/airconditioned vehicle giving all the orders, or back in the office shuffling papers. White is a bad color for sup's in any profession that would require lots of manual labor.
  24. I think if chats were scheduled and the room wasn't left open all the time, then things would be different. PKIU members would only be in there when events were taking place and chatting with other members.
  25. if The Beast is supposed to have a mining theme, then I think they need to do some major work on the theming. I have never seen any of the items while riding it. I don;t know why they would want to mine theme The Beast, it just doesn't make sense. Theme it about The Beast and I will be impressed. Calw marks on certain stretches of the ride, other cool things like glwoing eyes in the tunnels, stuff like that, about "The Beast," and you don;t want to disturb him, or he might come and get you.
