Are we overloading the forum software?

Featured Replies

Over the past few months since we discovered the construction in Action Zone, I've noticed that the KIC forums have been lagging. By that I mean that when I click on something, be it a forum, a thread, a like button, a post button, etc., it takes the system several seconds to respond. Within the past few days, as the post frequency has approached and exceeded 500 per day, this lagging has been extremely noticeable, with the forums sometimes taking as much as 20 seconds to register a simple like. This is not my internet connection, because this is the only site that does this.

It seems that the amount of lagging is directly proportional to the amount of activity on the boards at that moment. This makes me wonder it we are overloading the IP.Board software. Is IP.Board designed to handle the level of activity we have now? I suspect it's not. I know some forum software are better at handling highly active forums than others. I also know that getting a forum database converted from one format to another might be extremely expensive, so that would be a roadblock to changing software. However, if this level of activity continues, it may be something that Dane and the other admins need to look into, because the lagging is likely only going to get worse as we get closer to the announcement. While activity may drop after the announcement, many new users will stick around and become established users, and the next mystery construction project around 2016 to 2018 will generate even higher levels of activity than we have now and the lagging issue will be even worse then.

I noticed this too. Sometimes it won't let me get on any part of the forums and instead shows an error message.

The board we have here should far exceeding any volume of posts that we could only wish to achieve. Not saying there is or not an issue but I have had no problems with thread loads.

I've had the error message occasionally, but just hit refresh and the site is back.

Nope. Just a persistent error message each time. I come back in around 15 minutes and it's gone.

The lagging for me is occasional, likely due to HostGator's server being overloaded. IPB will become very slow when memory is constrained, the database is overloaded with queries, or both. These resources are shared with other websites.

The vast majority of the time, loading and submitting content is sufficiently quick.

I haven't had any issues with the forum, but I wouldn't completely roll out the host as the reason. I know neowin.net is one of the largest IP.Board, and they have much more traffic then us without problem.

I have not gotten any such message. Next time it happens, try copying the error code, and pasting it here. It is helpful to see what error code is thrown.

Here's what I got hope this helps. The webpage at http://www.KICentral.com/forums/index.php?/user/8629-cplerr-fan/ could not be loaded because:

This is the error I've got.

Edit: Looks like funpark and I posted the same error around the same time.

I've gotten the same error posted by TheCrypt and others above several times within the past 10 to 15 minutes.

If you're getting such errors, wait a couple minutes and try again.

When errors are frequent, such as right now, try loading several threads into tabs at once. This way, you can read without risking interruption.

I'd say it was the server. Even at 5 AM this morning, the site was seriously laggy, whilst the decent people were largely snoozing.

Now it's speedier than it has been for weeks.

Thanks, Mr. Dane.

I have had the same issue a few times, but just refresh and it's gone. The busiest day that KIC had ever had was the day of the DB announcement and the server came out just fine.

Yes, BUT...it's now doing it at odd times, like 5 AM, when very, very few people are on the site. About 20 minutes ago, it was oozing. Now, it's flying again. This is not normal.

I still have yet experienced this issue and hope I don't until it is worked out.
