August 7, 200917 yr Most of the coasters that dominate the Golden Tickets and various enthusiasts polls usually are coasters that are taller. This topic will focus on the best of the smaller, specifically those coasters under 100 feet tall. Coasters that just miss the 100' barrier include: Maverick - Cedar Point (105') Thunderhead - Dollywood (100.5') Any of the Batman the Rides (105') Prowler - WOF (102') My personal favorite is Raven at Holiday World, particularly at night. If the coaster was a few hundred feet longer it'd be near the top of my wood coaster list, but as is it's a great ride and for it's size is really impressive. I can't wait to ride Phoenix at Knoebels to compare. Let's hear what you got!
August 7, 200917 yr Steel: Flight of Fear (74') It's my number 3 steel coaster (after Diamondback and Millennium Force). Wood: Legend if you count it. 99' lift hill but the drop is 113'. After Legend, Grizzly at Kings Dominion (87'). All my top 5 wood are over 100' tall (Voyage, Prowler, El Toro, Legend, Beast), and Grizzly is my number 6.
August 7, 200917 yr Flight of Fear, Revenge of the Mummy, Big Dipper (GL), Kentucky Rumbler, Wilcat (CP), just to name a few.
August 7, 200917 yr Raven at Holiday World. I love all of their roller coasters. This one is easy, Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer. It is only 80' but has a 115' first drop. This is one of my top 3 woodies. http://www.thegravitygroup.com/portfolio_fleet.html
August 8, 200917 yr Raven at Holiday World.. it's short and sweet, but that thing flies and guess what? NO TRIM BRAKES!
August 8, 200917 yr Cyclops at Mount Olympus. My #1 wooden coaster! Skyliner at Lakemont is also a religious experience. Flyer, who likes to fly free of trims!
August 8, 200917 yr I find it kind of funny that Diamondback has 6 hills greater than 100' My vote goes to Racer.
August 9, 200917 yr Asked of dare-to-fly: ^Did you ride backrow? Are you old enough? Yep, he's old enough, and I'm pretty sure he's ridden the back row!
August 9, 200917 yr i'll vote racer and wildcat (at Cedar Point), i don't know why but wildcat is one of my must rides at Cedar Point, way before maverick and almost infront of millie
August 9, 200917 yr I would say: steel: FOF wood: either racer or blue streak. IMO blue streak is a great ride and is still in pretty good shape, taking its age into consideration.
August 9, 200917 yr Taking its age into consideration? Taking its age into consideration? Sheesh. Terpy is feeling very old, and remembers when Blue Streak at Cedar Point was brand spankin' new...
August 9, 200917 yr Adventure Express. My first coaster. Still is great. Zach, who can't wait to ride back row on Cyclops.
August 19, 200916 yr We got a couple of new great woodies that fit this catagory. Lightning Racer at Hershey Park. Wow this ride was incredible. IMO this is the best coaster in the park. Comet also at Hershey Park. This is a Herb Schmeck coaster from the 40's. One of the best classic coasters (before I was born) I have been on. Phoenix at Knoebels. Also a Schmeck design that started out in Texas but then was moved to PA in 1985. The train leaves the station then it is total darkness for a few turns then out you pop onto the lift hill.
August 19, 200916 yr Raven is amazing, Big Dipper at Geauga Lake was insane...Standing up the entire trip back to the station. I love Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom. Best Wood under 100: Raven Best Steel Under 100: Flight of Fear
August 19, 200916 yr Taking its age into consideration? Taking its age into consideration? Sheesh. Terpy is feeling very old, and remembers when Blue Streak at Cedar Point was brand spankin' new... haha sorry Terpy. My dad did the same thing when i said that. hahaha
August 19, 200916 yr Oh yeah I bet if I rode Revenge of the Mummy I would change my answer, even from Flight of Fear - it looks really awesome!
August 31, 200916 yr KI's Flight Deck... front row on a cool evening. Just in-your-face forces from start to finish.
August 31, 200916 yr Author This one is easy, Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer. It is only 80' but has a 115' first drop. This is one of my top 3 woodies. http://www.thegravitygroup.com/portfolio_fleet.html I initially voted for Raven, but after riding Ravine Flyer II this weekend I'll agree. This ride really shines at night, and I actually liked the night rides here better than the Raven ones, which is saying something because Raven night rides are the bomb! Still need to ride Phoenix, though...
