Yes they were fun but the park turned cooperate and towrads promoting movies so they had to go.

And now that they're going to get rid of the movie theme they can bring them back

It has never been confirmed that they are getting rid of any movie themes. Last time I was at the park a signifigant amount of movie theming was still around and everytime Kinzel is questioned about the 10 year agreemetn they have with Paramount Motion Pictures and the 4 year for the Nick charecters, he says "we're still in discussions".

I could not "rip" the cord at Carowinds during my August visit.

Maybe, I am out of practice. Phantom Flyers - It will always be Flying Eagles to me.

It can be reliably reported the Eagles, under whatever name, are running great and very, very fun...even if a bit further away...

Unfortunately one of the first things that Carowinds did when they got the ride was rip the old motor out and replace it. The new motor did two things, first was allow it to speed up and slow down to a stop very fast (anyone who worked the eagles or remembers them very well remembers that they took forever to actually stop), and second, does not alow the rotating structure to give nearly as much as the old motor did making it a much more constant rotation rather then the jerkyness caused by the snapping on the old motor. This caused a small decrease in the ability to snap them. Finally I just think that the eagle's were in a much better, more open spot that had a lot more air movement at KI then they do at Carowinds. Anyone who's been to Carowinds can tell you that Phantom Flyers is in the corner of their kids area surrounded by rides and trees on one side and a large wooden fence on the other.

I miss the Eagles so much, everytime i rode it along time ago my mom thought i was going to fall out and land on Vortex's track..

I miss them also. I'll never forget when I got my little brother to ride them for the first time. I looked over and asked if he was ready. He then looked at me with a puzzled expression. I then finally got them to snap and he loved every minute of it. We rode the Eagles multiple times every visit from then on out.

I'll also never forget the first time I made it snap. After watching people while waiting in line I finally got it down. It really was a great feeling. Man i miss that ride.

Just when you thought the Flying Eagles topics were over. I miss them very much as well and all the memories i had on them and not to sound mean or anything but guys it is time to move on. IJ:ST was a good addition to that area and attracts more people.

Look at the bright side. If the Flying Eagles were still there, the 3 point challenge wouldn't be, and I think everyone would miss the basketballs everywhere and the annoying music that is played at the 3 point challenge.

If the Flying Eagles were still there, the 3 point challenge would probably be somewhere else. Perhaps where the EuroBungee is, or in one of the many places in the park the money-generating thing would easily fit.

Someone should build their own eagles

Actually, you could technically build something with just one eagle. Two steel truss members coming out of the middle base that is spun by a motor. Then just hang the "eagle" from the truss ends by steel cables and voila!

Also on another note: One year I went to Stricker's Grove, and they have an "eagles" ride there too, but for some reason I could barely jump the cables at all... and I'm 99% sure that I was the best in the world at bouncing them at KI. One time I got my eagle to turn backward! Anyway, does anyone know why some eagles rides would bounce better than others? The only think I can think of is if the spacing between trusses was larger so that there was less play with the cables.

Flying Eagles to me is one of those rides, I didn't realize how much I miss until it was gone. I could never get them to snap, but I could have learned. I just wish they would have left them at KI, just because of the historical value they had to KI.

Yes. Larson builds them. They aren't as much fun as the older ones, in my opinion. Some parks that have installed them include Great America of California, Indiana Beach and Camden Park.

You know, I'm sure you were good at bouncing and all, but the eagles were at the park for 32 years. Saying that you're the best in the world is pretty far fetched. For instance, there was a day when CoasterDime, The Snapper [The New England Snapper] were there when they snapped the ride so much that it actually bent the center rotating structure leaving one side up several feet off the ground, and one side down barely inches off the ground. The ride had to be shut down for several days after the incident. Not to mention, there is nobody who could ever tear up the eagles like those who worked the ride. No I was NOT one of them, (though I have turned my eagle all the way around several times myself) however I do know many of the more recent ones and yes, they could definately out snap anyone.

Like I said, I dont doubt that you were good at snapping them, but best in the world... not quite.

ok... I have read many things about "snapping" the eagles. I have been going to Kings Island for over 25 years. I haven't ridden the Eagles since I was a little kid with my grandma. Will someone explain to me exactly what snapping is.

Please don't harrass me about not knowing, I guess I thought as a teen and adult that the Eagles weren't that fun so I never rode them and learned about this great thing called snapping. Now I read all of your fun times on the eagles and I wish that I would have tried it as an adult.

Sure thing. Snapping the cables as it is called is caused when you move the rudder in such a way that the cars will essentially stall out at the bottom. But because the ride continues to spin, the slack that is in the cable is quickly picked up, causing a snapping sound as the tension is returned to the cable. Often times, the cars receive a nice little jolt as the cars pick up speed after being "stalled" out.

Kings Island`s Eagles were often thought of as among the best set of Eagles for snapping ability. Also because of the fact that Kings Island, unlike some other parks, did not ban people from snapping the cables. Some parks run their Eagles so slow that snapping is next to impossible to execute. There is an Eagles ride at Stricker`s Grove in Ross, Ohio that you can get some snapping on. And of course, you can go visit Kings Island`s Eagles at Carowinds as Danny Phantom Flyers.

As for snapping....

When you ride the eagles and you get them to go really high, the air drag pushes your eagle backward. The structure itself is moving at a constant speed, but if you can get high enough, the air pushes it back far enough so that the eagle "lags" behind the structure. Then on the way down, the cable tension makes it compensate, and by doing that, it thrusts the eagle forward, thus generating slack in the front cable. Then when you get to the bottom, gravity takes in and the slack in the cable drops, and your eagle SLAMS really hard. It was probably one of my favorite experiences at the park. Nothing like a good slam that shakes the whole structure.
