Vortex, technically Flight of Fear did not get new trains.  The old trains were just modified to have the old restraints removed and the new lap and ankle bars installed.

And I don`t consider IJST to be lame.  Yes, it is not tall or long or very fast.  But its launch out of the station is still quite intense for the size that it is, and that helix is also a fun little element that isn`t found on most coasters.  While it isn`t high on thrills, and may not be your cup of tea, I don`t consider it a "lame" coaster.

Have you been to any other park other than PKI that has a launch coaster? If so what launch coasters have you been on in other parks?

I could be wrong - but I think it has LSMs just to start it - it is like a minimal force. The LIMs are what bring the train to full speed. That is why IJST has the friction wheels.

There is an excellent description of it on Dave Althoff Junior's Site... Check it out - it makes for fascinating reading!

Dave Althoff's LIM Page

Take it from someone who knows it. FOF has LIM and only LIM. Shoots you from 0-50mph in 4 seconds (acutally, it really shoots you 0-45 in 4-6 seconds, depending on the wieght of the train). Does not slowy take off and then speed up. It just speeds up. Period.

It just occured to me - Weight Drop Launch isn't listed! ohmy.gif The only types of Launches I have been on are Weight Drop and LSM/LIM. They are pretty similar and both pretty cool - but I think the Weight Drop launch is cooler. It just feels wierder. It is more forceful for one - but more smooth too. Dont know how to explain it.

Vortex, yes I have been on launch coasters at other parks. I have ridden Volcano: The Blast Coaster at PKD (as well as their FoF), Hulk at IoA, Rock `N` Roller Coaster at Disney MGM, the former Superman at former SFWoA (now Geauga Lake), and Wicked Twister and Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point.

L*R - the acceleration is not 9.8m/s^2. It would be if there was no train attached to it. The G force acceleration on the weight is 9.8m/s^2 - but attached to the top of the weight is a cable of tension equal to the weight of the cable plus the train. But the weight is much heavier than the train - so it is still a forceful launch.

I really enjoyed the Hulks up hill launch at IOA. Next would have to be the superman launch at California's .... oh man what park is that. It's a Six Flags Park just can't remember wich one. unsure.gif

HAHA i bewlieve it is Six Flags Magic Mountain or is that the one in Kentucky? The Hulk's launch was bad censored.gif .
