Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare New in 2026

I disagree. I think it was a historical move for the 50th and then they realized there was still interest in the characters and story. Why not capitalize on what you already created when you know it is popular with guests instead of starting from scratch.

Oh I agree on using characters that were already created but how would they truly know if those characters were still relevant or engaging 20 years later if they hadn't done the show? I think it was a great way to honor the history of the park but if that show had bombed do you think we'd be seeing them invest a sizeable amount in a new Phantom Theater ride? I think not. So I agree the motivation behind the show was probably 90% let's pay homage to the history of the park for its 50th anniversary but I do think they always had it in the back of their mind to "test" the audience of how many people remember and still enjoy these characters.

  • Why? Does it really make a difference that they aren't replacing the track?  Personally, I'd rather them invest the bulk of capitol in the figures/scenery...

  • I'm crying. We are so back.

All I want is them to have Maestro playing the organ in the queue again and PLEASE NO FUN TV'S IN THE QUEUE!!!!

I can respect the 90/10. Knowing it needed updated, why not let the show steer the decision a bit. A totally different experience would most likely (totally assuming) cost more money than brining back the PT characters.

I wonder if we'll see anything else PT related in the park this season. We've talked about potential walk-around characters, but I also think it would be cool to see some special in-park announcements like they had with Phantom Theater Encore come back. Another PTE show is probably not in the cards (as much as I'd like it to be) unless KI is able to beef up their entertainment offerings.

I unironically thought there was like a slight change PTE might've had a third season if they hadn't posted a full recording on YouTube this week. I'm not expecting too much, because I think the ride itself return is a major accomplishment. Something very easy to do that I hope they put somewhere is bringing the displays from the Encore lobby somewhere in the park (whether that's in an indoor extended queue/meet and greet space inside Peanuts showplace if crowds necessitate that, or at a merch display). I think a smaller-scale PT show in the peanuts showplace (with Puppets maybe??) would be cool, but I can't realistically see that happening this season.

Also whatever fireworks or drone show they have will probably have a Phantom Theater segment. Maybe a ride overlay or character thing will open for Haunt or Winterfest.

Personally I want to see more merchandise come out of this. Plush toys would be awesome! Fingers crossed that we get some hats as well with the PTON logo to add to my hat collection.

Permits were filed for “KI Dark Ride” and “Ride Wait Sign” in January. I did a records request and they were denied as:

Quote

Our office has been notified that the records associated with this request are deemed to be trade secrets, as per Ohio Revised Code Sections 1333.61 through 1333.69. The release of trade secrets is prohibited by state law, as these documents and records are exempt from Ohio’s Public Records Act. As this is the case, these records will not be disclosed or made available to the public.

I love how the entire ride blueprints were allowed to be public record, but this isn’t. The fact that this needs a ride wait time sign scares me though, I wonder if they’ll sell single-use Fast Lane for it.

The wait time sign will be a welcome addition, and may be the first attraction in this building to have one!

I suspect the electrical blueprints were able to be released because they don't actually show much about the ride besides scene names and some figure/prop and screen locations — which most of the latter is hard to figure out if you've never seen this kind of plans. It also might be because the company completing the work is (presumably) based in Ohio (and therefore subject to the OPRA mentioned above), unlike Sally Dark Rides who are based in Florida. There might be something about the new PT's potential as a dark ride at other parks involved as well, which would explain the "trade secret" part.

It looks like I failed to include the full description of the permit: "KI Dark Ride Merch Cart" and "Ride Wait Sign"

I forgot merch cart.

I don't understand what would be a trade secret with that or any potential secrets.

Haven't seen anything posted in this forum yet, so thought I'd share. This article from Attractions Magazine -- and other posts I've seen on FB -- show a first-look at the lobby for Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare. And I gotta say: my excitement level just went up. I love the animatronics in the queue....not just Maestro back home where he belongs, but also a No-Legs Larry animatronic. So much better than the TVs!!

The park simply (finally) found a legal way to keep it out of enthusiasts hands under the broad umbrella of trade secret.

I just woke up after THREE back to back strange dreams featuring weird versions of the new Phantom Theater that are absolutely almost nothing like what the ride experience is going to be like. The first two focused on the ride experience while the third was a queue walk through but got cut off due to my alarm going off. The first two also had a really fast spinny part in the ride which makes no sense for obvious reasons. My excitement for Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare runs so deep its embedded within my pysche. As cool as some of what I saw in those dreams was, none of it is what I will actually see on ride. Ive never had 3 back to back dreams about something specific before nor dreams about an upcoming attraction before. This is something I think some of the teams at KI and Sally would love hearing about.

Totally get this. Hahaha. Just one more month and maybe we’ll be able to sleep again normally.

To be frank, this is the first time I have ever had any Phantom Theater dreams as far as I recall XD.

New episode of “Behind The Curtain has been dropped. And on Opening Day. Go Reds.

Nice interview with Rick Bastrup. Can’t wait to see more.

I still can’t stress enough how much of a missed opportunity not having a first rider event is for phantom theater, I would argue that this would be the biggest amount of money raised for charity for any of these events we’ve done in the past given the immense amount of fans that the ride has young and old and not to mention it provides us super fans a first ride on the ride and gives us a chance to really take it all in and also donate money to a great cause. I don’t know what the reason would be not to do a ride auction unless they are running on a tight schedule and don’t think it’ll be ready on time or possibly they think it’ll be finished at the very last minute but I was really hoping by now they’d have announced an event because I had such a blast at the Mystic Timbers auction, and I feel this auction would be much more lucrative but that’s just me

I wonder if any of the other Six Flags parks will hold first rider charity auctions this year. Kings Island isn't having one for PT:ON, and I haven't heard about one from Six Flags Over Texas (for Tormenta) or one from Six Flags New England (for Quantum Accelerator). Great Adventure probably won't host a charity event for Shoreline Pier either. It might not be worth it to the company at this time while they work to pay down their debt. That's part of why I think Kings Island held the Boo Blasters auction — not to pay for the new ride but to help reduce Six Flags overall debt one payment at a time. Hopefully they will continue to work with their respective charities in case it becomes worth it again.

I had no idea Richard Doyle has voiced a bunch of characters! On his wiki page, it shows he has voice acted in a few things I grew up with/was exposed to as a kid: Regular Show, Lego The Adventures Of Clutch Powers, and Justice League! Wow! Thats awesome! Im amazed that the same voice behind Maestro is the same voice behind the troll from Lego The Adventures Of Clutch Powers who is quite the funny character!

He was also Mr. Gaines on Cheers with Woody Harrelson, another Kings Island legend.

I knew nothing about Cheers so I had to look it up. Its way before my time and not really my taste, Im not huge on sitcoms at all though at the same time, some cartoons Ive watched share similarities to sitcoms. Still, thats really cool

It appears that this photoshoot has been cancelled at the last minute according to an email from a (the?) producer at Six Flags Creative Services that was posted to Facebook. The event was scheduled to happen tomorrow, April 14th, but apparently an email was sent out at 6:02PM tonight saying that it was cancelled.

The post didn't have any date for rescheduling so I don't know if the park is just not ready for it or what.

Can’t imagine the ride not being ready would be the catalyst for canceling the shoot. Unless they remarkably behind or something. But realistically, the shoot could’ve happened even if things weren’t 100% ready.
