What is Truly Cincinnati?

Featured Replies

Day after day I hear tag lines and mottos of or about Cincinnati. This phrase and repetition of the city has began to hatch thoughts on what truly is Cincinnati? Is it a park that is 30 minutes away? Or is it the Germanic heritage that many can trace back to? All of which could be correct in a sense, so what are your thoughts?

Friday night football, Skyline Chili, Riverfront Stadium, and the Opening Day Parade jump immediately to mind.

Findlay Market! As a kid living in OTR on Lang Street, my family shopped there all the time.

When I think Cincinnati, I think of the zoo and the city skyline (not Skyline Chili, but how the city skyline looks from afar). Although I'm not much of a sports fan, the Reds and the Bengals are both Cincinnati traditions that also come to mind when I think of the city.

Reds, Reds Opening Day Parade, the Bengals, Skyline and Gold Star, Kings Island, riverboats, Montgomery Inn, the (flying) pigs

The chili. Ours is completely different from the chili anywhere else - and there's so many variations of it, you can have Cincinnati-style chili anywhere from Newport to Price Hill to Anderson.

Also the Reds.

Growing up Cincinnati was all about chili and sports. Since I have moved away from the area Cincinnati now is "ALMOST HOME!" Nothing like passing "Florence Ya'll" knowing that the awesome city skyline will fill your view coming through the cut in the hill. (When I lived in Colorado.. it was exciting to see the Cincinnati/Dayton signs).

Gold Star? Skyline? Dixie Chili? Empress Chili?

Memories of the Carew Tower observation deck, and walking along the Roebling Bridge are as Cincinnati as it gets for me.

The Island Queen was a fixture for my parents when they took the river boat from the public landing up to Coney Island to spend the day and dancing to the sounds of the big bands at Moonlight Gardens.

  • Being a pro football fan who learns not to get too excited when the home team is ahead by more than a touchdown, even during the final 2 minutes;

  • Being a pro baseball, well, watcher who has felt the exhileration of watching the home team win the World Series more than once in his long lifetime;
  • The number 4,192 - Don't care if Pete Rose is banned for life; that's a memory that I choose to cherish;
  • Bob Shreve's Past Prime Playhouse, which remains in the hearts of many a Cincinnatian;
  • The Garfield Suites Hotel, and its world-class amusement park creating general manager, Gary; and...
  • Ah, the Name is Bootsy, Baby!

I'm from Indy so I'm surprised no one has said LaRosa's or Jungle Jim's. Two things I think of when I think of Cincy.

I'd say that High School Football, Opening Day, Fountain Square, Cincinnati chili, and the love of pigs are all truly Cincinnati.

Forgive this ignorant idiot from up north, but what is Cincinnati about flying pigs?

Friday night football, soccer Saturday, reds, Bengals, uc-xu, Miami U, skyline, Kroger, grippo's,

Kings Island, Coney island, Americana, flying pig.

DC traffic is awful.

Atlanta..... Well okay atl is just awful.

Chicago is terrible in its own right.

LA is ridiculous.

But Cincinnati has a special brand of inconsiderate semi's, morons and frustration.

I hate Cincinnati traffic. Really grates on me.
