You should be careful in any instance. I mean, if you subdue the criminal and hold him down with a gun and then the police rush in and they see someone with a gun holding it over someone...guess who get's shot? Not the criminal. The person holding the gun. UC's policy is to hide. Get to a room that will lock. If that is not your room, find one. If the intruder is in your room plead with him. Only after all of that should you fight. Even then, it's sometimes an exercise in futility.

At Brookville's old high school where I went to Middle School, there was barely any security. It was right in the middle of the city too. But my 8th grade year someone drove by firing a hand gun about 4-5 times, then went and robbed the bank. Now our new school has about 10 cameras surrounding the outside and every door is locked. Plus no student is allowed out unless they are with a teacher. We are told to sit down and "shut the f*** up" (as my history teacher says) if someone is in the building.

Well I was in his class when the incident happened and when we heard the shots we all froze. Then some idiot started talking and then the teacher yelled "sit down and shut the f*** up!". So now every time we have a drill he'll refrence that.

Isn't that against school policy for a teacher to use obscure profanity? I can understand when the shots were being fired that he'd say that but you said every time you have a drill he says that.

Please....I read literature in English II-IV that made Shut the **** UP look like a saints prayer.

I'm sure it is frowned upon, but most of my teachers did. Especially when you get to college they don't care at all.

At my college there are professors who call out females for being "promiscuous" and they tell us that we "have no chance at surviving in society." Tough love.

Honestly, the detectors weren't doing anything whether they were on or not. The only thing detectors do is make worried people feel safer.

Are there really still schools where you don't have to enter through the office?

Many schools have many different entrances. Even if there was one entrance that entered through an office do you really think that is going to stop a crazed student with a gun?

My high school was one of the ones that said to sit in the corner with the lights off until help arrives. Little did they know that if a real emergency did happen I was getting my girlfriend and I the hell out of the building.

Grab a fire extinguisher while your at it

If you grab a fire extinguisher and plan on using it you better know the facts. The Kitchen cans marked with a "K" spray a wet chemical that looks like foam. Yep, I'm sure it would burn like hell right in the eyes, since it is an irritant (potassium acetate). The other extinguishers are generally filled with Dry Chem. Dry Chemical is this very fine pale yellow powder. It is usually as fine or finer than baby powder. When this goes off 1.) It makes a huge cloud, and a huge mess, 2.) If you inhale it you will cough -- a lot, 3.) It is hard to see through. It gets caught in your eyelashes and anywhere else it can settle, and it sucks if you actually get it in your eyes, so better to be prepared for what you are about to do, and know the side effects of your actions!
