August 11, 201115 yr Yesterday we saw something that I'm not sure how to feel about. We were walking from DB to Beast, and as we passed the Crypt there was a woman with 2 kids (4 to 5 years old) in a wagon by the green drink recycling bin. She had taken the lid off and had a few shopping bags leaning in digging through the bin getting out aluminum beer cans loading up the plastic bags. Hard times are visible everywhere, but this was kind of suprising to see in the park. I was curious to read the perspective of some of the philosophers here about this. I haven't formed an opinion one way or the other, just reporting. (Forum template request: please add a spell check button. I hate being revealed for the nonspelling doof I am.)
August 11, 201115 yr My first thought is.. if you are that tight on money, what are you doing in Kings Island?
August 11, 201115 yr You, of course, not meaning you snowman, for those in the forums who take every word to literal meaning, but you in the broader sense.
August 11, 201115 yr An odd sight indeed... The question is, if they saw this happening, would a security guard take the time to stop and ask what was going on and order this woman to cease her garbage rooting?
August 11, 201115 yr If I was the security guard I would tell her nicely to stop as it makes the park look like clevela... oops I mean crap... -MagmMForce247
August 11, 201115 yr Yeah, I agree with kingsrattler, if you are so tight on money why are you at Kings Island?
August 11, 201115 yr People who are tight on money might want a day with where their kids can have a lot of fun. Its sort of a escape from reality.
August 11, 201115 yr Maybe they all had season passes that they bought last fall and fell on hard times since. I hope that is not the case. I hate to see people suffer.
August 11, 201115 yr Author They weren't dressed as though they were homeless, kids looked clean cut, and their wagon was one of those nice big wooden Radio Flyers that looked fairly new. I've gotten to thinking about the revenue of all those aluminum cans. I bet KI gets quite a check from Rumpke. I also wonder if there's an actual KI policy forbidding guests from collecting the aluminum cans.

I have friends and family that live in Clevelasportburgh! Stop it! Maybe they're avid recyclers, and just can't pass up the opportunity...
August 11, 201115 yr Actually KI pays to recycle. From my understanding they make their money off of recycled cardboard and that essentially covers the dumpsters and recycling bins around the park.
August 11, 201115 yr Author Actually KI pays to recycle. From my understanding they make their money off of recycled cardboard and that essentially covers the dumpsters and recycling bins around the park. Then Ki isn't losing any money from her taking the beer cans. So is there any harm in her doing this? I personally don't see any.
August 11, 201115 yr There is a chance that she might have an obsessive compulsive disorder. That was my first thought, too. Maybe she didn't think the park recycled and thought the cans would go to waste if she didn't save them. People always think that their own behavior isn't strange, it's other people that are strange. KI has probably never thought of a policy towards collecting the cans because they never though anyone would do it. I wonder if that lady does that in other pubic places?
August 11, 201115 yr Author Visually it is a problem. It gives the park a negative image in my opinion. I agree and it did. Coming off the rush and mental break DB offers, it was quite an intense dose of reality. That was my first thought, too. Maybe she didn't think the park recycled and thought the cans would go to waste if she didn't save them. Except that she was digging in a bright green bin labeled "Recycle".
August 11, 201115 yr Also, I should mention that I know an employee who was gathering cans to recycle at one point and was never told to stop.
August 11, 201115 yr Except that she was digging in a bright green bin labeled "Recycle". Maybe she thought it was a command then.
August 11, 201115 yr Author Maybe she thought it was a command then. That's still cracking me up!! (I aint gonna be using that new pink emoticonyface.... 'cause I'm happily married)
August 11, 201115 yr Except that she was digging in a bright green bin labeled "Recycle". Maybe she thought it was a command then. hahahah The work of Xenu, no doubt! Perhaps a tinfoil chapeau would alleviate that problem.
August 11, 201115 yr The work of Xenu, no doubt! I had to go Wiki Xenu...before I did I thought it was going to be a video game reference...but as Rodney Dangerfield might have said "I was WAY off!". It's nice to learn something new...even if it probably won't ever come into play in my life.
August 12, 201115 yr Well, I live in a very economically depressed area of the country. It's quite common to drive down the road and see people picking up cans and scrap metals. You feel sorry for them until you see a nice, new, shiny vehicle sitting on the side of the road...then they get in and drive off.

The wagon she was pulling was definately nicer than anything I had as a youngster. But they didn't recycle aluminum cans when I was a kid!
