Actually, everything sinks a few millimeters every year.

He said inches as in significant sinking not natural sinking

The key hole opens a hidden door where you can store your cell phones,keys and your cookies so you wont lose them.

If I'm thinking of the same thing you're mentioning, then they are for manual release in case the computer fails for some reason.
